The sources used for tafsir bi'r-riwāyah can be ordered by the rank of authority, as the Quran, hadiths, the reports by the sahabah and tabi'iun, classical Arabic literature, and Isra'iliyat. The most authoritative source of the interpretation is the Quran itself.
The purpose of Tafseer is to study the principles which the Quran came to clarify:
The explanation of a perfect set of beliefs with respect to the Creator, and the relationship of the created with the Creator.
The perfection of personal conduct and good morals.
tafsīr, (Arabic: “explanation,” “exegesis”) the science of explanation of the Qurʾān, the sacred scripture of Islam, or of Qurʾānic commentary. So long as Muhammad, the Prophet of Islam, was alive, no other authority for interpretations of the Qurʾānic revelations was recognized by Muslims.
They used a number of sources in their tafsÏr including the statements of the Prophet and their own reasoning or understanding (ijtihad), as well as Arabic grammar. They were also aware of the circumstances in which the Qur'an was revealed, as well as the reasons of revelation and its place.
A tafsir is an explanatory commentary on the Qur'an, in which the author elucidates the meaning of the holy text by explaining individual words or verses. The author of this tafsir is Mahmud ibn 'Umar al-Zamakhshari (1075–1144), a Persian scholar from Zamakhshar, in the Khwarazm region of Iran (now Turkmenistan).
Over the course of time, three modes of tafsir (“interpretation,” “commentary,” “exegesis”) of the Qur'an have met with scholarly approval in order to help deep dive for these revelatory gems – although with varying degrees of authority and validity: [i] tafsir bi'l-ma'thur or “interpretation based upon textual reports .

Although Muslims read the Quran and pursue it with interpretation regularly, the reading of Tafsir has its significance. The goal of a Tafsir is to discover the genuine implications of the sections/chapters of the Quran.
Reading only the translation can give the literal meanings of the words of Quran, however, Tafsir comes with context in which a particular Ayah was revealed, hence giving a context to each and every word, which consequently means a better understanding of Quran and its verses.
The first full tafsir attributed to Muqatil ibn Sulayman ibn Bashiral-Balkhi. Ma'ani al-Qur'an (The Meaning of The Qur'an) by Abu Zakaria al-Farra (207AH).
The Principles of Tafsir refer to the systematic methodology in interpreting and gaining an understanding of the verses of the Holy Qur'an. Then do they not reflect upon the Qur'an? The Quran is better understood through the sunnah (or actions and clarifications by the Prophet (saw).
Thus, the only accepted Tafseer is that which follows the following sequence: Tafseer of the Quran by the Quran, Tafseer by the Sunnah, Tafseer by the sayings of the Sahaabah, Tafseer by language, and finally, Tafseer by opinion.
Shah Abdul Qadir, son of Shah Abdul Aziz Dehlawi, produced the first Urdu translation in 1826.
Tafsir (interpretation of Quran) is the science of interpreting and rendering commentary on the Quran, its exegesis. The sources of commentary on Islam are: 1) the Quran itself because a verse of the Quran is often used to explain another verse; 2) the Hadith.
Wadud initiated feminist-based hermeneutics, a method of interpreting the Quran that refers to the idea of gender equality and justice and rejects the patriarchal system. Wadud criticizes classical interpretations, both methods, perspective and contents.
From the beginning of Ramadan, every year, Muslims congregate in various Mosques or Learning Centres where the exposition of the Qur'an (Tafsir) is rendered by learned Muslim scholars. This is in accordance with the Prophetic tradition which encourages better understanding of the Qur'an.
Tafsir refers to a genre of Muslim literature and to the process of interpretation itself, especially (but not solely) that of scripture.
Fakhrud-Deen ibn 'Alee ar-Raazee (1150-1210 CE/544-606 AH) was a Shaafi'ee scholar who excelled in the grammatical sciences as well as philosophy. His tafseer is printed in eight large volumes; however, his contemporaries mentioned that Fakhrud-Deen did not complete his tafseer.
